MEDFORD, MA (September 14, 2025) - The Tufts University men's soccer team made up for lost time after Saturday's scoreless draw by putting six goals on the board against Husson University on Sunday afternoon.
The Jumbos (3-1-1) started the match with a slower tempo than usual, allowing themselves to feel out the Eagles (0-5-1) defense in just their second meeting all-time. The opening five minutes were all the Jumbos needed to get the reads they wanted, and they launched their attack swiftly. Senior
Mateo Bargagna launched the first shot of the game, and with blood in the water, the Jumbos were rolling.
The eighth minute of the game saw the Jumbos score the opening goal. It was a lovely strike by junior
Xavier Canfin from the top of the penalty area, with plenty of power to put it past the opposing goalkeeper. Sophomore
Ellis Denby picked up the assist on the cross, and the Jumbos were off to a 1-0 lead early.Â
The offense was now firing on all cylinders, and immediately applied the pressure on the Eagles once more. Freshman
Ben Ortman was a living nightmare for the opposing defense, using his size and skill on the ball to work into the penalty area. Five minutes after their opening goal, Ortman was brought down inside the area, winning a penalty kick for his team. Sophomore
William Cornog stepped up to the spot and delivered a smooth finish for the 2-0 lead.
The Jumbos made a number of substitutions midway through the frame, giving a different shape to their offense. Junior
Henry Brown exploited this change in the look and fired home the Jumbos' third goal of the game.
Henry Perkins and
Mason Shultz earned the assist after a great linkup play in midfield to release Brown.
The Jumbos held on to the 3-0 lead into halftime, leading the shot tally with 17 to Husson's one.
The 69th minute would see the Jumbos get their fourth after consistent pressure on the Eagles' defense.
Henry Perkins, the senior super-substitute came on and found himself on the other end of a centering ball by freshman
Gianluca Fallone. A beautiful strike off the bottom post and in, giving Perkins his first goal of the season.Â
Another season first came in the closing minutes as freshman
Hastings Brislin came on late in the second half. The rookie fired a shot from the top of the penalty area through traffic to give Tufts their fifth goal of the game. Perkins picked up the assist, but it was clear that even with a five goal lead, the Jumbos were not done yet.
Perkins would find the back of the net once again after a chaotic sequence in front of goal led to another penalty kick for the Jumbos. The senior striker stepped up to the spot and put the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner for his second goal of the game.Â
The Jumbos would outshoot the Eagles 40 to one, with 19 corner kicks to Husson's zero and only one shot on goal allowed.
Tufts will have the week off to focus on practice and classes before they return to the pitch on Saturday in a NESCAC match against Hamilton at 2:00 pm.
