No. 23 Men’s Soccer Earns Dominant 9-1 Non-Conference Victory Over Westfield State Under the Lights

MEDFORD, MA (October 20, 2026) – The No. 23 ranked Tufts University men's soccer team posted a season-high nine goals with three coming in the first half and six occurring in the final 45 minutes to grab a 9-1 non-conference victory over the Owls of Westfield State University tonight on Bello Field.

The Jumbos (8-2-3, 4-2-2 NESCAC), were potent on the offensive end as Griffin Bone buried two goals, including his first career marker. Curtis Fitzgerald also picked up his first career score in the dominant victory. The Owls (1-14-1, 0-5-1 MASCAC), stunned Tufts early on by taking a 1-0 advantage just under two minutes into the game, as Daniel Nunez-Saravia ripped a perfect shot from the right side of the box that beat Nikola Antic in the bottom left corner.

Tufts played aggressive offensively following the Westfield goal and knotted the game at one at the 20:52 mark. Bijan Akhtarzandi-Das sent in the shot for his second goal of the season and Xavier Canfin earned his team-leading fifth assist on the score. Canfin put home his one tally in the 28th minute to put the Jumbos on top 2-1. Ben Brown flew an over-the-top feed to Canfin from beyond midfield and Canfin shoved the ball past the Westfield netminder.

The Jumbos added another before the break as Brown earned his second score of the season following a series of moves in the box that through off multiple defenders.

Tufts entered halftime with a dominant 26-1 advantage in the shot department, while also leading six to zero in corner kick chances.

Henry Brown got the offense going in the second half as he tabbed his fifth goal of the season in the 53rd minute to give Tufts a 4-1 lead. Ben Brown dished out his second assist of the day on Henry's marker. Just over five minutes later, Ben Pensky got his name on the score sheet, sending home his second of the season in the 59th minute.

Bone and Fitzgerald scored their first career-goals back-to-back in the 69th and 83rd minutes, respectively, to extend the Jumbo lead to five.  Theo Behe captured an assist on the Fitzgerald score for his first collegiate-career point, while Jack Swartz also notched his first collegiate-career point with a helper on Fitzgerald's goal.

Ben Ortman and Bone delivered the final two strikes for Tufts within the final six minutes of action. Ortman put home his second of the season, unassisted, while Bone tabbed his second of the game in the 88th minute with Ortman on the assist.

Antic played over 66 minutes in goal for Tufts, while Julian Ballester saw the final 23 minutes in net. The Jumbos ended the night with a resounding 51-3 advantage in shot attempts, while also leading nine to zero in corners.

The Jumbos will visit Williamstown, MA on Saturday for a NESCAC contest with Williams at 1:30 PM.
