Box Score AMHERST, MA (October 3, 2026) – The No. 18 ranked Tufts University men's soccer team erased a three-goal deficit on the road against the Mammoths of Amherst College to earn a 3-3 draw in NESCAC action this afternoon.
The Jumbos (5-1-3, 2-1-2 NESCAC), fell behind early on in the first half as the Mammoths (2-3-2, 0-3-2 NESCAC) surmounted a three-goal lead in the opening half before Tufts found their first marker. Amherst came out aggressively and put shots on goal early on to put the pressure on the Jumbos.
Finn Hoefer put up the first goal for the Mammoths in the sixth minute. Hoefer won a 50-50 ball in midfield after a long pass from an Amherst midfielder and put a series of moves on a Tufts defender before sliding a left foot shot inside the near-post.
The Mammoths doubled their lead in the 29th minute after a chaotic sequence in net led to a score from Dimash Anuarbek. Amherst earned a corner kick after some offensive zone pressure which resulted in a bouncing ball in front that rolled off Anuarbek's shin and trickled past
Nikola Antic.
Hoefer picked up his second goal of the half just over a minute later, pushing the Mammoth lead to three. Mohammed Nuhu sent a cross in from the right side of the field and Hoefer blistered a volley into the left hand side of the goal.
Tufts responded with urgency and pressed the Amherst defensive end immediately, earning a much needed penalty kick tally from
William Cornog, his second consecutive game with a penalty kick tally.
Amherst held a slight six to five advantage in the shot department heading into halftime, while also leading two to one in corner kick chances.
The Jumbos made it a 3-2 score just over ten minutes into the second half, after an own-goal from Amherst.
Xavier Canfin sent an overhead cross to
Henry Brown streaking towards goal and a Mammoth defender ended up heading the ball past his own goalkeeper, while trying to clear the ball.
Alex Johnson delivered his second clutch moment of the season, burying the equalizer in the 68th minute to knot the game at three.
Ellis Denby sent a perfect ball into the middle of the box,
Ben Ortman knocked it down with his head to Johnson, and the sophomore ripped a low shot through traffic into the far side of the cage.
Both teams had solid chances in the physical final 20 minutes of play, but neither team managed to put together a seriously threatening goal scoring opportunity.
The Jumbos are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they will visit Clinton, NY for a NESCAC contest against Hamilton College.
