No. 3 Tufts Men’s Tennis Sweeps Trinity (Texas), Advances to Fifth Straight Elite Eight

Written by Ben Lable, Athletic Communications Student Intern

MEDFORD, MA (May 10, 2026) – The No. 3 Tufts men's tennis team hosted the No. 17 Trinity (Texas) Tigers in the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Medford. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs, with a trip to the Elite Eight in Chattanooga on the line.

While Trinity had not reached the quarterfinals since 2015, the Jumbos were no strangers to the stage, having advanced to the Elite Eight in each of the last four seasons. That experience proved crucial for the Bo's, as Tufts earned its fifth straight trip to the Elite Eight with a 4-0 victory over the Tigers.

When the match began, the mothers of three Tufts seniors came out to perform the coin flip for the doubles sets, an honor given in celebration of Mother's Day. Andrej Djokic and Kaetan Mehta got the Jumbos started by defeating Ethan Flores and Roshin Kamath 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Stavros Mastogamvrakis and Javier Gonzalez then clinched the doubles point at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 win over Aashish Dhanani and Ryan Warren. The duo of Mastogamvrakis and Gonzalez extended their doubles winning streak to 11 matches with the victory. At No. 1 doubles, Sacha Maes and Alex Ganchev were leading Jared Perry and Kishan Kersten 5-4 when the match was abandoned.

In singles play, Maes was the first Jumbo to add a point, defeating Kamath at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-4. Right behind him, Mehta beat Flores at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-0. For the second straight day, Djokic clinched the match and sent the Bo's to the next round. Dhanani battled hard, but Djokic pulled through in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The remaining three singles matches were abandoned once the match was decided.

The Jumbos' next match will take place at Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Tuesday, May 19, against the No. 8 Swarthmore Garnet. The two teams have met twice previously. In 1996, the Garnet handed the Jumbos a 4-0 loss. However, in 2024, Tufts defeated Swarthmore 5-1 in the regional final of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the final site. Swarthmore enters the match with a 22-6 record and notable wins over Johns Hopkins, WashU, and Emory. The Garnet also captured their fourth straight Centennial Conference title with a 4-0 victory over Haverford College.
