George Munger

Now in his ninth season with the Tufts University men's rowing program overall, George Munger is the Director of Rowing at Tufts and head coach of the men's team. He has helped guide the Jumbos to becoming one of the top Dviision III rowing programs in the nation.

The men's rowing head coach at Tufts since 2019, Munger was promoted to interim Director of Rowing in August 2023 when former Director of Rowing Noel Wanner left Tufts for a position at Dartmouth College. The interim tag was removed following a very successful men's rowing season in 2023-24. The Jumbos won the Collegiate Eights event at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in the fall, then went on to finish as the national runner-up at the IRA Division III Championship in the spring. Munger also led the Jumbos to a Points Trophy victory at the New England Rowing Championships in May 2024. Tufts University junior Alex Flynn, a member of the Jumbo men's rowing team, won a silver medal with the U.S. Para Rowing Mixed Coxed Four at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Munger and assistant coaches Andy McLaughlin, Peter Malinovsky and Jacob Welborn were named as the Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association for the 2024 season.

The Jumbos also earned IRA national berths under Coach Munger in 2022 - when the team placed second in first varsity racing - and in 2023 when the first and second varsity squads combined to place fifth in the nation.

Hired at Tufts in 2016, Munger was previously an assistant coach for the Jumbos for three years and served as recruiting coordinator. In 2018-19, he was an assistant when the Tufts men placed fifth in the grand final at the New England Rowing Championships for their highest finish at the event since 1992 at the time. After the spring 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, the team returned in 2021 for a NESCAC season and Munger led the Jumbo men who won the NESCAC East Division to advance to the conference championship round where they finished third.

The rowers recruited to Tufts by Coach Munger and his staff also excel in the classroom. For the 2023-24 spring season, a total of 19 Tufts men's rowers earned Academic All-NESCAC honors for carrying grade point averages of 3.50 or better.

Munger was an assistant coach at Boston University prior to coming to Tufts. He went to the University of Minnesota where he rowed in the men's heavyweight 8+ for three years and in the men's lightweight 8+ for a year. While in college he started coaching at Twin Cities Youth Rowing, where he remained until moving to Boston as an IRL fellow. As part of Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) he completed an intensive yearlong Advanced Certificate in Rowing Leadership fellowship program for future leaders through a curriculum based on both academic and experiential learning methodologies.
