Norie Hammond

In her fourth year at Tufts, Norie Hammond is Associate Head Coach of the Jumbo men's and women's swimming teams.

Last year, she helped direct Jumbo teams which were both in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. The Tufts men sent 12 individuals to the 2024 NCAA Championships, where the team finished in ninth place for their best showing since 2018. Nine Jumbos came home as All-Americans. The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) runner-up as well, the team won five events at the conference championships. Tufts' women achieved their third-straight Top 10 finish at the NCAA Championships last season. Twelve of the 14 Jumbos who qualified nationally achieved All-American status, leading to a 10th-place NCAA team finish. They were also second in the NESCAC as a team, with two individuals capturing conference titles.

Prior to the 2022-23 season, Hammond was promoted to Associate Head Coach. She was part of the Tufts women's team which won their second straight conference title with a dominating performance. The Jumbos then placed sixth at the NCAA Championships for their best national finish in over 40 years. Tufts won national championships in three events and had 12 women achieve All-American recognition. The men that year had a 10th-place showing at the NCAA meet where eight Jumbos won All-American awards. The Jumbo men were a runner-up at the NESCAC Championship in 2023.

Hammond's first season at Tufts was 2021-22. She assisted head coach Adam Hoyt, who was the NCAA Division III Women's Co-Coach of the Year and the NESCAC Women's Coach of the Year. The Tufts women won their first-ever NESCAC Championship in 2022, and then continued their momentum with 13 team members qualifying for NCAA’s where Tufts won an individual and relay national title. Their seventh-place NCAA finish was the program’s best at the time since the team was sixth in 1982. Ten Jumbos earned All-American awards at the meet. The 2021-22 Jumbo men sent eight swimmers and divers to the NCAA Championships and all came home as All-Americans after helping the team finish in a tie for 21st place. Earlier in the year, Tufts finished as the conference runner-up.

Hammond has been coaching for more than15 years and brings a wide variety of experience to the Jumbos. Over the course of her career, she has worked with club, high school, college, and professional post-grad swimmers from all over the world including two-time Olympian Heather Arseth, U.S. Olympian and former World Champion Jordan Wilomovsky, U.S. National Team member Katy Campbell, as well as a few foreign national team members. Hammond has developed U.S. and High School All-Americans, Olympic Trials qualifiers, Senior and Junior national qualifiers, Futures champions and qualifiers, and Sectional champions and qualifiers.

Most recently she served as Associate Head Coach for the YMCA of the North Shore in Massachusetts. Prior to that position she was the Head Sprint Coach at Team Santa Monica (Calif.), Senior Program Director with Peddie Aquatics and the Peddie School (N.J.), and Assistant Coach and Stroke specialist at Trinity Prep (Fla.).

In addition to coaching, Hammond has participated in the USA Swimming Women's Leadership Summit and volunteered with the U.S. Special Olympics.
