Paul Sweeney

After 29 years as one of the longest-tenured sports information directors at a single school in New England, Paul Sweeney recently stepped into a new role as Athletic Communications Specialist.

Hired at Tufts in 1993, Sweeney was Director of Athletic Communications through August 2022 and was responsible for creating and executing communications strategies that promoted athletic department activities, reinforced the mission and supported fund-raising goals.

Sweeney is a 2019 recipient of the Irving T. Marsh Award presented by the ECAC Sports Information Directors Association (ECAC SIDA), which is given annually to a University (Division I or II) and College Division (Division III, NAIA or Junior College) ECAC-SIDA member who, in the opinion of the membership and Executive Board, has exhibited excellence in the field of sports information. During his tenure at Tufts, Sweeney has been recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for excellence in writing and publications. He is a member of the Tufts Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee. 

Formerly the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBCA) publicist, Sweeney received the organization's Andy Baylock Distinguished Service Award in 2011 recognizing significant contributions to the betterment of New England College Baseball.

A 1989 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Sweeney was an Athletic Communications Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for four years (1989-93) prior to coming to Tufts.
