Than Finan joined Tufts in 2018 and has been fundraising exclusively for athletics since 2021.
As the Associate Director of Athletics Development, Than oversees Tufts Athletics’ annual fundraising program, manages a portfolio of athletics major gift and leadership annual fund prospects, supports fundraising for all athletics capital projects, and works closely with Tufts’ administrators, coaches, and alumni volunteers to drive engagement. Since 2021, The Tufts Fund for Athletics has grown from raising $1.2 million in current use funds to raising $3 million annually.
Than works as the direct advancement contact for 14 varsity programs, as well as Tufts’ 32 club sports, strength & conditioning, and sports medicine. In this capacity he has helped Tufts’ programs launch team-specific endowed funds, alumni leadership groups, networking programs, and annual events. From 2019-2022, Than managed the $7 million fundraising effort for Tufts’ now completed baseball stadium, Gittleman Park.
Than came to Tufts after receiving his MBA and Masters in Sport Management from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst. While there, he worked as a Development Assistant for the Minuteman Club, a summer marketing assistant for Dartmouth Athletics, and as the Graduate Assistant to the Director of the McCormack Department of Sport Management at UMass.
Prior to graduate school, Than was an assistant soccer coach for two years at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he assisted in all facets of the program, including practice planning, recruiting, scouting, offseason workout development, 1:1 training sessions, video breakdown, leadership training, and more. Additionally, he was directly responsible for goalkeeper training and summer recruiting camp operations. In 2014, behind the team’s first-team all-conference GK, Catholic won the Landmark Conference Championship and secured their first ever NCAA postseason victory.
Than is a 2013 graduate of Williams College. As a goalkeeper on the Williams men’s soccer team, he competed in two NCAA Final Fours and was an All-America second team selection in 2012.
