SOMERVILLE -- The Tufts University Jumbos lost a heartbreaker in
overtime, 3-2, to the Colby College Mules in NESCAC men's soccer
action on Homecoming Day Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field. This is
the second straight year the Jumbos have been defeated by the Mules
in extra time.
The Mules dominated the scoring chances in the first half,
putting six shots on net and they were able to cash in with 4:22
remaining as first-year Nick Aubin (Simsbury, CT) took a feed from
sophomore Josh Lyvers (Harvard, MA) to send it by Tufts senior
keeper Pat Tonelli (Andover, MA). Tonelli made
five saves in the half for the Jumbos.
The scoring picked up in the second half as the Jumbos scored
two goals on three shots on net. Sophomore Matt Blumenthal
(Simsbury, CT) tied it up with second of the season for
Tufts with 29:08 left in regulation, scoring off a free kick by
junior tri-captain Naji Muakkassa (Jamesville,
NY). The match would stay even until Colby reassumed
control with 10:51 remaining as Lyvers controlled a bouncing ball
to kick it past the outstretched arms of Tonelli.
With the Mules leading 2-1, Tufts turned up the pressure and
tallied their second goal with just 1:39 remaining on an unassisted
goal by senior tri-captain Bear Duker (Newton,
MA), his second tally of 2009, to send the two teams to
overtime.
In the overtime period, Aubin would take a beautiful lead pass
from junior Nate Seiberling (Sharon, MA) to go one-on-one with
Tonelli. Aubin sent it just inside the left post for the
game-winning goal, his second of the day and his third of the year.
The winner came less than four minutes into the extra frame.
Senior keeper Dan Marden (Londonderry, NH) went the distance for
Colby, making two saves on four Tufts shots on goal. Tonelli
finished with the five saves recorded in the first half on a total
of eight Mules shots on net.
The Jumbos remain winless in NESCAC play at 0-4-1 and are 1-6-2
overall, while Colby earns their first conference win and stands at
1-4-1 and 2-5-2 overall. Tufts returns to action under the lights
at Bello Field on Tuesday night against UMass-Dartmouth for a 7 pm
kick-off. The Mules host Amherst next Saturday at 1:30 pm.
