MEDFORD -- The Tufts University volleyball team served nine
aces, including four by junior Nancy Shrodes (Manhattan
Beach, CA), as part of a three-set NESCAC victory over
Colby College on Saturday afternoon. In the match played at
Bowdoin, Tufts dominated with set scores of 25-12, 25-19 and
25-13.
Tufts, ranked #1 in New England, has now won 19 consecutive
matches after losing their season-opener. Coach Cora Thompson's
team is 19-1 overall and 5-0 atop NESCAC. Colby is at the bottom of
the league with 4-13 and 0-6 records.
Once again, juniors Dawson Joyce-Mendive (Minden,
NV) and Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach,
CA) were a force offensively. Joyce-Mendive finished with
15 kills and three errors in 28 attempts (.429) and Updike hit .370
with 12 kills and two errors in 27 swings. First-year
Brittany Neff (Culver City, CA) added three aces
to the offense. An easy match on defense featured 10 digs from
senior co-captain Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz,
CA).
Heather Arvidson had six kills and two blocks for the Colby
College. Clare Reich finished with 13 defensive digs, Emily Varni
had nine digs, and Megan Conroy finished with eight digs and a pair
of blocks.
The Jumbos take the week off until play at Middlebury next
Friday at 6:00 pm. Colby will next play at Regis College on
Saturday against the host school and Daniel Webster.
