MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Tufts University volleyball team, winners
of 19 straight matches entering Friday, was stunned in four sets by
the host Middlebury College Panthers in a NESCAC match on Friday
evening. The loss is the first of the season in NESCAC play for the
Jumbos and ends their lengthy winning streak.
Tufts went extra to win the first set 28-26, but the Panthers
rallied for consecutive 25-22, 26-24, and 25-22 set victories to
win the match. Middlebury, seventh in NESCAC, improved to 12-4
overall and 3-2 in the league. Tufts, ranked #1 in New England this
week, remains atop the conference standings at 5-1. The Jumbos are
now 19-2 overall.
Junior Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) led
Tufts with 20 kills in four sets, while senior co-captain
Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz, CA) added 19. Senior
co-captain Dena Feiger (Long Grove, IL) dished out
55 assists, better than 13 per game. Junior libero Audrey
Kuan (Los Altos, CA) had 20 digs. Tufts had 16 blocking
errors in the match.
NESCAC play continues for the Jumbos tomorrow at Middlebury, as
they'll face Hamilton at 11:00 and Williams right after at
1:30.
