MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- After suffering their first conference loss
of the season to the Middlebury College Panthers on Friday night,
the Tufts University volleyball team bounced back with two NESCAC
wins on Saturday. Playing in a conference quad weekend at
Middlebury, Tufts defeated Hamilton in three sets and then followed
that up with a four-set win over Williams College.
With the wins, Coach Cora Thompson's team is now 21-2 overall
and 7-1 in NESCAC. Tufts took care of Hamilton quite easily,
winning straight sets 25-17, 25-21, and 25-16. Junior
Dawson Joyce-Mendive (Minden, NV) and classmate
Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) paced the
offense with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Eight digs
defensively by senior co-captain Brogie Helgeson (Santa
Cruz, CA) led that category.
Like Tufts, Williams had just one league loss entering today's
match. After losing the first set 25-16, Tufts took the match with
25-19, 25-22, and a resounding 25-13 in the third set scores.
Joyce-Mendive's 24 kills in the match are a season high for the
Jumbos. Updike and Helgeson offered good support with 15 and 13
each. Updike also served three aces and tied for the team-high with
25 digs in the match. Lexi Nicholas (San Diego,
CA), the team's 5'8" sophomore middle, was in on five
blocks including two solos. The victory is the second of the season
for Tufts against Williams, who are the defending conference
champions. Tufts defeated the Ephs 3-0 at the MIT Invitational.
The Jumbos play a mid-week non-conference match on the road at
Endicott College Wednesday at 7.
