WILLIAMSTOWN -- The fifth-ranked Tufts University field hockey
team posted an emphatic 3-0 victory at Williams College in a NESCAC
contest Saturday afternoon. Coach Tina McDavitt's team finished
with a 26-1 advantage in shots and 18-0 in penalty corner
opportunities.
The field was slippery as the game was played in a downpour, but
both teams managed to maintain composure throughout the
competition. Tufts opened the frame with a smattering of shots
alternated with penalty corners. On their fifth penalty corner
opportunity only 3:40 into the half, senior Michelle Kelly
(Downingtown, PA) passed to junior Jess Perkins
(Barrington, RI) who knocked in the ball for the only goal
the Jumbos would need.
The Jumbos controlled the entire half, finishing 15-0 in shots
and 10-0 in corners. However, Williams keeper Katrina Tulla made
seven saves and it was 1-0 Jumbos at the break.
The second half began similar to the first when Kelly burst
through traffic and found the net off a pass by junior
Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) less than two minutes
into the period. Five minutes later, Tufts senior co-captain
Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY) ran the ball up the
left line and was met in the circle by Tulla. Her shot rebounded
off Tulla's pads onto the stick of Brown, who lifted the ball past
Tulla and into the goal improving their score to 3-0. Both Kelly
and Brown had a goal and an assist each.
The Ephs put their lone shot on Tufts sophomore keeper
Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) during the second half.
She saved it, and that was all she had to do for the team's seventh
shutout of the 2009 season. The Jumbos finished with 11-1 and 8-0
leads in second-half shots and corners, respectively. Tulla had
seven more saves in the Williams cage to finish with 14.
It was the fourth straight win for Tufts over Williams. The
Jumbos improved to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in NESCAC. They finish
their regular-season schedule next Friday afternoon at Bowdoin in a
rematch of the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship Game. The Ephs'
records are now 5-8 overall and 5-3 in the league. They are at
Middlebury next Friday.
