Alix Michael's two first-half goals led Tufts
to its second straight conference victory

LEWISTON, Me. -- Sophomore Alix Michael (Mercer Island,
WA) tallied two goals as the Tufts University women's
soccer team had its best offensive output of the season in a 3-0
NESCAC win at Bates College on Saturday afternoon on a wet Russell
Street Field.
The Jumbos (4-3, 2-2 NESCAC) jumped on the Bobcats (2-4-1, 1-3
NESCAC) for three goals in the first half. Bates held strong in the
second half, but was unable to find the net offensively.
Michael's first goal of the game came in the fifth minute of the
contest when she blasted in a shot from 25 yards in front of the
net through traffic. Tufts quickly made it 2-0 in the 14th minute,
when Jumbos senior Whitney Hardy (Truckee, CA)
headed in a ball that had been rebounded around the goal after a
corner kick.
Later in the half, Michael notched her second goal in the 41st
minute of play, beating a Bates defender and tucking her shot past
Bobcat sophomore goalie Annie Burns (Topsfield, MA) and inside the
far left post. The goal was her team-high third of the year.
Burns turned back seven shots for Bates, while her Tufts
counterpart, senior Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH),
recorded one save for the Jumbos. Tufts outshot Bates 20-4 in the
first half, but the Bobcats evened things up in the second half,
with both teams taking six shots. The Jumbos attempted 10 corner
kicks overall to two for the hosts.
Tufts begins a four-game home-stand when they host Brandeis on
Wednesday. The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday as they will
host in-state rival Southern Maine at 4 pm in a non-conference
game.
