BRUNSWICK, Me. -- Bowdoin co-captain Dana Riker celebrated
Senior Day with the game's only goal, lifting the Polar Bears to a
key 1-0 conference win over Tufts University on Friday
afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 8-6-0 (4-5-0 NESCAC) and earn the
sixth seed in conference play and will travel to play at Middlebury
in the opening round of the conference tournament on Sunday at
noon. Tufts (7-6-1, 4-4-1 NESCAC) earns the fourth seed and will
host Trinity on Sunday in the first round. Tufts and Trinity
finished with identical conference win percentages of .500. The
teams tied in head-to-head competition. Tufts has more conference
wins, earning the No. 4 seed.
The game's only goal came courtesy of Riker in the sixth minute.
The senior ripped a rocket from 25 yards out that tucked under the
crossbar to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead at 5:05.
Neither team could muster any great scoring chances for the
remainder of the game, while Tufts best opportunity came from
sophomore Lauren
O'Connor (Dudley, MA) in the second period. O'Connor
received a pass in the box and lofted a shot just high of the bar
as Bowdoin maintained a one-goal edge.
The Jumbos recorded a large 20-4 margin in shots, with 10-2
advantages in both halves. Kat Flaherty made 13 saves in the
victory for Bowdoin, while senior Kate
Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) recorded one save for the
Jumbos. Tufts finished with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
