MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Two days into the 2009-10 season, the Tufts
University men's swimming & diving team has a 3-0 record after
winning a tri-meet at Middlebury College including Connecticut
College on Saturday. The Jumbos defeated the host Panthers easily,
207-89, and won a more competitive battle against the Camels,
162-132. Tufts had opened the new year with a win over Colorado
College at Hamilton Pool on Friday night.
Connecticut College won eight of the 16 events that were held on
Saturday, compared to six for Tufts and two for Middlebury.
However, the Jumbos had a quantity of scoring finishes that pushed
them over the top.
In the opening 200 Medley Relay, Jumbos E.J. Testa
(Cheshire, CT), Lawrence Chan (Fresh Meadows,
NY), Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL), and
Owen Rood (Branford, CT) won by 0.61 of a second
with a 1:36.07 time.
Chan and Rood would later produce individual victories. Chan won
the 100 breaststroke (59.92 seconds) and Rood touched first in the
50 freestyle (21.74 seconds). Sophomore Alex Strittmatter
(Fairfield, CT) earned the other swimming win for the
Jumbos, racing a 1:49.17 200 freestyle.
Senior quad-captain Rob Matera (Trumbull, CT)
had the top scores in 1-meter (267.38) and 3-meter diving (268.50)
fields that primarily consisted of Jumbo competitors.
CC's Harry Squires was the top distance freestyler at the meet,
winning the 1,000 (10:19.86) and the 500 (5:01.11). Teammate Tim
Walsh won both backstrokes, swimming 52.07 in the 100 and 1:57.49
in the 200. Walsh also led off the first-place 200 freestyle relay
(1:27.35) for the Camels.
Host Middlebury had wins by John Dillon in the 200 butterfly
(1:59.41) and by Harry Anixter in the 400 individual medley
(4:30.79).
The Jumbos are idle until swimming at the MIT Invitational on
December 4-5.
