CAMBRIDGE -- Senior quad-captain Rob Matera (Trumbull, CT) won by large margins in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the 2009 MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday. His performances helped Tufts place second out of seven teams at the meet.

Matera won the 3-meter event with a 319.70 score that was almost 60 points better than second-place Max Norris from NYU (259.80). In one-meter, Matera earned a score of 293.15 that was nearly 39 points better than Norris's runner-up tally of 254.30 points. Both of Matera's scores were over the NCAA qualifying standard.

The Jumbos finished second at the meet despite not having an individual swimmer place among the top two in any event. With their depth, they scored 750.5 points to trail only host MIT (1,197.5). Third-place NYU finished with a 696 score. Brandeis, Bowdoin, Colby, and Wheaton were also in attendance.

The Jumbos featured two runner-up relays. The 200 freestyle foursome of junior David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL), junior Gordy Jenkins (Kansas City, MO), junior Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT), and sophomore Owen Rood (Branford, CT) touched in 1:25.83. The 200 medley group of sophomore A.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT), senior quad-captain Lawrence Chan (Fresh Meadows, NY), senior Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL), and Rood swam 1:36.88 for second place.

The MIT Invitational was the final meet of the first semester for Tufts. After their annual winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale, they compete at Wesleyan with Williams on January 16.
