Audrey Kuan earned an All-Tournament selection for her solid defensive play

WALTHAM -- The Tufts University volleyball team won both of its matches at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record. Tufts shut out the host Judges in the first game and then defeated Babson College in four games to close out tournament play.

After losing to UMass Boston and winning against Gordon College on Friday night, Tufts was sharp on Saturday. They went extra to defeat Brandeis in the first game, 27-25, but then easily swept past the Judges with 25-15 and 25-18 scores in the second and third games, respectively. Junior Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) had a dominant offensive match, striking 13 kills with two errors in 22 attempts. Senior co-captain Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz, CA) added 12 kills. That duo were the primary targets for senior setter Dena Feiger (Long Grove, IL), who finished with 45 assists in three games. Sophomore Audrey Kuan (Los Altos, CA), named to the All-Tournament team, had 12 digs against Brandeis. Feiger also had nine digs and three block assists.

The Jumbos continued their strong play with convincing wins over Babson in the first two games, 25-18 and 25-15. After the Beavers gave the Jumbos their lone loss of the day, 25-22 in the third game, Tufts took the match with a 25-23 final in the fourth game. Updike's 15 kills paved the way and first-year Kiersten Ellefsen (Goshen, NY) added 10 in her collegiate debut. Tufts scored a remarkable 14 points on service aces, with five from junior Nancy Shrodes (Manhattan Beach, CA) and four by classmate Kelly Engelking (Westborough, MA). Those two players had 10 digs each defensively, and Kuan was nearly perfect on 29 pass attempts.

Tufts plays at Gordon on Tuesday night before opening their home season in the newly remodeled Cousens Gym on Friday.
