MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The third-ranked Tufts University field
hockey team trailed for the first time all season, but bounced back
to take a 3-1 victory at Wesleyan University in a NESCAC game on
Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts Tufts to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league, while
the Cardinals fall to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in NESCAC. It is the 25th
consecutive regular-season victory by the Jumbos.
Wesleyan's Ashley McLaren scored unassisted off a penalty corner
opportunity just 7:37 into the game to give the hosts a 1-0
lead.
The advantage was short-lived. Tufts senior Michelle
Kelly (Downingtown, PA) scored amidst a crowd in front of
the Wesleyan net at 13:06, her first of the season. Junior
Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) had the assist. Four
minutes later, junior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA)
continued with her offensive production by scoring off another
Burke assist for a 2-1 Jumbo margin. Brown took Burke's pass from
the right side and put a shot into the upper left corner for her
fifth goal.
The 2-1 lead stayed that way for more than 20 minutes into the
second half until Tufts got an insurance goal from senior
co-captain Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY). She
went end-to-end for her second tally of the year at 57:51.
Tufts dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Wesleyan 25-6. The
visitors held an 18-3 edge in shots in the first half. Wesleyan
freshman keeper Tori Redding stopped 17 shots, including 13 in the
first period. Jumbo sophomore Marianna Zak (Concord,
MA) made four saves to get the win. Tufts took nine
penalty corners to Wesleyan's one in the first half, but Wesleyan
held a 6-2 edge in that category in the second.
The Jumbos next host Endicott College on Thursday afternoon at
4:00. Wesleyan plays at Wheaton on Tuesday.
