NORTH DARTMOUTH - Freshman forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael,
Portugal) chipped a 30-yard shot into the goal with 1:32 remaining
to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer
team a 3-2 overtime win over visiting Tufts in a
non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday evening.
Ferreira's goal capped a rally that saw the Corsairs come from
behind after they trailed at halftime, 2-0. Senior midfielder Mike
Alves (Seekonk, MA) put UMass Dartmouth on the board when he
converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute, then freshman forward
Brenton Beaufils (Charlestown, MA) tied it when he scored on the
rebound of a shot by freshman forward Anthony Basile (East
Longmeadow, MA) with 1:18 left in regulation time.
Tufts took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Kieran Lewis
(Haywards Heath, UK) scored his first of two goals in the 17th
minute. He scored again less than two minutes later to give the
Jumbos a 2-0 first-half advantage.
The Jumbos outshot the Corsairs 16-15. Sophomore goalkeeper Mike
Phelan (Carver, MA) made six saves for UMD, while junior Alan
Bernstein (Wayne, NJ) made seven for Tufts.
The Corsairs are now 7-2-2, while the Jumbos are now 4-5-1.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Mass Maritime
Thursday evening. Tufts will visit Trinity Saturday.
