MEDFORD - Senior Kelly
Engelking (Westborough, MA) recorded 12 kills as the Tufts
University volleyball team finished NESCAC regular-season play for
2010 with a 3-0 victory against Hamilton College on Saturday
afternoon at Cousens Gym.
The Jumbos finished 7-3 in the league and completed a weekend
sweep of NESCAC games following a big 3-2 victory over Williams at
Cousens on Friday night. Coach Cora Thompson's squad is 16-6
overall. Hamilton College's improving team is now 9-11 overall and
1-7 in NESCAC. Tufts won by set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and
25-16.
Tufts labored through the first set before posting the victory.
The score was tied at 20-20 before the Jumbos scored five of the
final six points, one on a kill by junior Lexi
Nicholas (San Diego, CA). Junior Cara
Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) was a key contributor for Tufts
with four kills in the set.
Hamilton began the second set with three straight aces by
sophomore Cecelie Pikus (Short Hills, NJ). A trio of kills from
Engelking helped Tufts move into a 7-3 lead, but they could not
keep put the momentum and were later tied 14-14. However, Tufts
controlled the second half of the set and won 25-17.
Like most of the first and second sets, the third was played
competitively. The Continentals earned an early 4-3 edge on a kill
by first year Megan McCareins (Evanston, IL), but Tufts eventually
led 14-9 on a kill by senior Nancy
Shrodes (Manhattan Beach, CA). Hamilton was within 18-14 after
a kill by first year Meredith Nuber (Glenview, IL), but the Jumbos
finished off the Continentals behind three Engelking kills.
In addition to Engelking's offense, Tufts received nine kills
each from juniors Lexi Nicholas (San Diego, CA) and Cara
Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA). Sophomore Kendall
Lord (LaJolla, CA) averaged 11 assists per set while adding six
kills, 13 digs and three block assists. Sophomore Brittany
Neff (Culver City, CA) was in on four blocks.
McCareins had seven kills and 15 digs to lead Hamilton, while
Nuber recorded four kills, seven digs and a block. Pikus finished
with five aces to go with 12 assists, while junior Rachel Irizarry
(Woodinville, WA) had 10 digs.
