NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior Ron Coleman (North Haven, CT) buried
the game-winning header with 2:49 remaining in the second overtime
to lift the Tufts University men's soccer team to 1-0 NESCAC
win at Connecticut College Tuesday.
Senior Ben Green (Burlington, VT) assisted on the game-winning
marker. Junior Alan Bernstein (Wayne, NJ) made seven saves in the
blanking for the visitors, their second consecutive shutout. Casey
Marini (Hampden, MA) recorded three saves in the loss for the
hosts.
After a scoreless first half, the Jumbos nearly got on the board
with 39 minutes remaining. Franco Silva (Houston, TX) fired a low
shot, but Marini was able to make the diving stab for the
Camels.
The Camels had a golden opportunity in the 68th
minute. Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, CT) delivered a cross into the
middle of the box and Trevor Prophet (Nashua, NH) got a head on it,
but the shot sailed just out of play.
In the first overtime, Billy Hawkey (Pennington, NJ) launched a
shot with 3:30 remaining but Bernstein made the critical stop for
the visitors.
Tufts was able to break through in the second overtime. The
Camels were flagged for a foul on the left sideline. Green was able
to make the connection with Coleman, who buried the header at the
far post for the game-winner.
The victory is the first for Tufts since October 2 after a
five-game winless streak. They are now 5-5-2 overall and 3-2-2 in
NESCAC, greatly improving their chances of earning a conference
tournament berth. The last-place Camels are 4-6-1 overall and 1-5-1
in the league.
