SOMERVILLE - After a foul in the 71st minute, senior Ben Green
(Burlington, VT) netted a 25-yard free kick to give the Tufts
University Jumbos the lead and eventual victory, 2-1, over the
Bates College Bobcats in NESCAC's men's soccer action on Saturday
afternoon at Kraft Field. The game was played on Homecoming Day in
front of a large Tufts crowd.
Early in the contest, the Jumbos had a chance for a lead as
sophomore Franco Silva
(Houston, TX) put a header just wide of the Bates net. About 15
minutes later in the 17th minute, the Bobcats cashed in on their
opportunity as sophomore John Murphy (Yarmouth, ME) dribbled past
the defense and went one-on-one against the Tufts keeper for the
1-0 advantage.
While pressuring the Bates keeper in the 34th minute, Green
fired a shot that was blocked in front of the net, but it took a
Jumbo bounce to the right side of the box and first-year Sam Atwood
(Concord, MA) slipped it inside the post to tie the score. The
tally was the first of Atwood's collegiate career.
Tufts thought they had taken the lead in the 39th minute as
senior Ron
Coleman (North Haven, CT) put one in the net, but he was ruled
offside. It remained 1-1 into the half with each keeper being
credited with a save.
Bates almost took the lead back as well in the 59th minute when
freshman Dan Remillard (Hanover, NJ) was in front of the net, put
the ball over the reach of Tufts' junior keeper Alan
Bernstein (Wayne, NJ), but it hit off the crossbar and carried
over the net.
Green, who had already helped lead the Jumbos to the first goal,
got the call for the free kick in the 71st minute. He hooked it by
Bates' junior keeper Greg Watts (West Chester, PA) for his third
tally of the year. With the goal and assist, Green is now tied for
the team lead with six points.
The Jumbo defense held off the Bobcats late as they made a late
flurry. Bernstein finished the day with two saves helping to extend
the Tufts winning streak to three games. Tufts is now 2-1-1 in the
NESCAC and 4-2-1 overall. The Jumbos jump ahead of Bates in the
standings as the Bobcats fall to 1-2-1 in conference and 3-3-1
overall.
Tufts hosts Plymouth State at 7 pm on Tuesday night as Bates
hosts Southern Maine at 4 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
