TUFTS WOMEN'S SOCCER WINS SECOND STRAIGHT WITH 1-0 HOMECOMING FINAL OVER BATES

Box Score
First year Sophie Wojtasinski's first career goal was a NESCAC game-winner

SOMERVILLE - First-year Sophie Wojtasinski (Duxbury, MA) took a ball off the post and buried it in the back of the net in the first half, and from there the Tufts University Jumbos used defense to defeat the Bates College Bobcats, 1-0, in NESCAC women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field. The game was played in front of a large Homecoming crowd in support of the Jumbos.

The Bobcats' best opportunity all day to score came just one minute into the contest when junior Tina Tobin (Lowell, MA) tried to curl one into the top right corner of the net, but Tufts' sophomore keeper Phoebe Hanley (Mamaroneck, NY) was there to meet it.

In the 27th minute, the Jumbos were pressuring inside of the box when junior Olivia Rowse's (Falmouth, ME) shot from the right side caromed off the left post and directly to the waiting foot of Wojtasinski. With the keeper out of position, she tallied her first collegiate goal.

Tufts out-shot Bates in the first half 8-1, with three on net. Junior keeper Annie Burns (Topsfield, MA) compiled two saves in the first 45 minutes for the Bobcats.

As they did on Wednesday in a win over Babson, the Jumbos stepped up the defense in the second half in order to protect a 1-0 advantage. Bates could only manage one shot on goal in the half which was stopped by Jumbo first-year keeper Kristin Wright (Austin, TX).

While the defense played well in the second half, the Tufts offense continued to put pressure on the Bates defenders. The Jumbos forced Burns to make three more saves as they doubled up their shot total to 16.

Hanley and Wright combined for the shutout, with each keeper making a save. For Bates, Burns finished with six saves while allowing the goal in the first half.

The victory was the second straight 1-0 decision for the Jumbos, after a four-game winless streak was snapped on Wednesday. Tufts is now above .500 at 2-1-1 in the NESCAC and 3-2-2 overall.  Bates has lost three contests in a row and are 1-3-1 in conference and 2-4-1 overall.

Tufts returns to non-league action on Wednesday with a match at Brandeis set to begin at 7 pm, while Bates will travel to Southern Maine for a 4 pm contest on Tuesday.
