BURKE SCORES GAME-WINNER AS TUFTS FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS UPSET-MINDED WILLIAMS, 2-1

Senior Tamara Brown now has the three-best single-season goal totals at Tufts

MEDFORD - In NESCAC action on Saturday, the #4 Tufts field hockey team was put to the test against Williams, who came into the game at 1-6 in the NESCAC.  After a second-half Ephs' goal broke a 0-0 deadlock, Tufts came storming back and pulled out a 2-1 win.

Despite compiling nine penalty corners and 14 shots, and holding Williams to zero in both categories, Tufts was unable to put any numbers on the scoreboard before halftime.

After the break, Williams began to show some more determination.  Just under 20 minutes into the period, the Ephs found themselves with a rare lane to the goal.  Sophomore Nicolle Perry (Yorktown, NY) capitalized with a hard shot from outside the striking circle.  First year Emily Pavlini (Far Hills, NJ) was waiting on Tufts junior goalkeeper Marianna Zak's (Concord, MA) weak side and was able to deflect the ball in to make it 1-0 Williams.

Tufts didn't let the lead last long, however.  With a fast break off the midline, the ball was in front of the net in ten seconds. After a scrum, sophomore Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA) got the ball to senior Tamara Brown (Annandale, VA) who tied it 1-1 just 18 seconds after the Ephs' goal.

Neutral play continued with Williams racking up three green cards for their aggressive defense against Brown and the rest of the forward line. With 8:13 to go in regulation, Jumbo senior co-captain Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA) sent a leading pass up the left for classmate Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) who beat her defender and sent a hard ball past Williams' senior keeper Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, CT) for the winning tally.

Tulla would make 20 saves in the game on Tufts' 38 shots.  Zak would be forced to make three on four Eph shots.  The Jumbos finished the game with 24 penalty corners without letting up one.

With the win, Tufts remains in second place in the league at 7-1 (11-1 overall).  Williams drops to a three-way tie for last-place in the NESCAC at 1-7 (3-10 overall).

The Jumbos will return to action on the road Tuesday at Springfield at 5 pm.  The Ephs will next welcome Middlebury on Friday at 5 pm.
