NORTHAMPTON - The Tufts University Jumbos lost twice on Saturday
at the Hall of Fame Volleyball Invitational. In the Gold Bracket
semi-final at noon, the #4 seed Jumbos were blanked by #1 seed
Middlebury 3-0. Then in the third place match against #2 seed
Amherst later in the day, the Jumbos went down in four sets.
The Panthers rolled in three sets against Tufts 25-13, 25-17 and
25-14. Junior Cara
Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) had 10 kills with just one
error in 23 attempts (.391). Classmate Lexi
Nicholas (San Diego, CA) added five kills. The defense was led
by 12 digs from junior Audrey Kuan
(Los Altos, CA).
In the Amherst match, the Jeffs won 25-23, 25-18, 12-25 and
25-18. Tufts senior Caitlin
Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) had a 20-20 match, with 20 kills
and 21 digs. Spieler had 10 kills again, while Nicholas and senior
Nancy
Shrodes (Manhattan Beach, CA) also hit effectively. First year
setter Michaela
Sinrod (Corte Madera, CA) finished with 49 assists. Kuan's 23
digs were tops defensively.
Updike was one of eight players named to the Gold Bracket
All-Tournament team at the Hall of Fame Invite.
Tufts is now 17-9 and will play at Brandeis University's Judges
Classic next week before heading to the post-season.
