CLINTON, N.Y. - With their five scoring runners all finishing within 11th through 26th place, the Tufts University men's cross country team took third place at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship for the second straight year. Hamilton College hosted the event.
The Jumbos were led by sophomore Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) in 11th place overall with a 26:39.1 time over eight kilometers. He moved up seven spots from his 18th-place effort as a freshman last fall. Hamilton's Peter Kosgei won the 2010 conference individual title with a 26:06.8 finish. He became the first individual in the 28-year history of the event to win the NESCAC meet four times, doing so from 2007 through 2010.
Senior co-captain Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) turned in a strong performance for the Jumbos, scoring second for the team and placing 19th overall in 26:53.9. Freshman Liam Cassidy (Brunswick, ME) was third for Tufts, fifth among first-time runners, and 22nd overall with a 26:55.5 finish. Sophomore Kyle Marks (Carmel, IN) was 25th overall (27:01.2), while sophomore Tyler Andrews (Concord, MA) was close behind at 27:03.4 for 26th to round out the Tufts total.
Junior Scott McArthur (Denver, CO) narrowly missed scoring for Tufts, finishing a second behind Andrews in 27th overall (27:04.5).
Middlebury College captured their first-ever NESCAC title, scoring 78 points to overcome four-time defending champ Williams. Tufts finished with a 103 score.
The Jumbos race at the ECAC Championship meet next Saturday.
