WILLIAMSTOWN - Top 20 finishes by sophomores Kyle Marks (Carmel, IN) and Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) led the Tufts men's cross country team to an eighth-place finish out of 49 teams at the 2010 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship Race hosted by Williams College today. The Jumbos' top five finishes added up to a 162 score.
Marks was 13th out of 333 total runners at the race, covering the eight-kilometer course at Mount Greylock High School in a 26:13.1 time. Rand was close behind with a 26:15.5 finish for 17th place.
The third Tufts finisher in the race was sophomore Tyler Andrews (Concord, MA), whose 26:44.7 was 39th overall. Freshman Ben Wallis (Dover, NH) ran 26:46.1 for 41st place overall, sixth among freshmen. Senior Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) scored fifth for the Jumbos at 27:00.9.
Though Tufts did not qualify as a team for the NCAA National Championship Race next weekend, the top seven individual finishers from non-qualifying teams at Regionals make it to Nationals. MIT and Williams, the top two teams at the Regional race, earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championship. Depending on the at-large berths awarded in New England, Marks and possibly Rand could qualify for Tufts individually. That will be determined early next week.
