MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team put on a dominant performance in their first dual meet of the season against conference foe Bates College winning 216.5-81.5 on Friday night at Hamilton Pool. The Jumbos won 14 out of 16 events including both relays and both diving events.
Senior Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT) won three events on the night, the 50 free (22.00), 200 backstroke (2:03.43), and the 400 freestyle relay. On the relay, he teamed up with fellow seniors Mike Del Moro (Pequanneck, NJ), Joe Lessard (Framingham, MA), and David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL) for a time of 3:15.75. Lessard was also an individual winner on the night winning the 200 freestyle (1:48.11).
The Jumbos went 1-2-3 in two events on the night. In the first individual event, the 1,000 freestyle, junior Joe McLoughlin (North Eastham, MA) won the event (10:25.98) followed by freshman Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC) and junior Lou Tamposi (Hernando, FL). In the 200 butterfly, junior Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT) led the charge with freshman Matthew Wiens (Mercer Island, WA) and sophomore Dylan Portelance (Redmond, WA) finishing second and third. Strittmatter also won the 500 freestyle.
In the diving portion of the meet, Jumbo freshman Johan Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) won both the 1m and 3m over teammate Trevor Stack (Northbrook, IL).
"We raced really well," Tufts coach Adam Hoyt said. "A number of races came down to the end and the men were able to get their hand on the wall first." Hoyt felt the meet was a great start to the beginning of the season.
The Jumbos continue their busy weekend with a tri-meet at Connecticut College with Middlebury at 3PM tomorrow. Bates also has a tri-meet tomorrow at Wesleyan with Trinity.
