NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team defeated conference foes Middlebury and Connecticut College in a tri-meet at Connecticut College on Saturday. The Jumbos defeated the Panthers 209-90 and the Camels 174.5-124.5.
The Jumbos were led by junior Owen Rood (Branford, CT), who won the 50 free (21.87) and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:26.71). On the relay he teamed up with seniors Gordy Jenkins (Kansas City, MO), Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT), and David Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL). In the 100 freestyle, Rood, Altman, and Meyer finished second, third, and fourth respectively.
Sophomore Brian Marko (Barrington, IL) won the 200 butterfly (2:02.89) by a significant margin. His victory came at a critical time for the team and was huge moral booster. The other individual event winner on the swimming side of the afternoon was senior Zed Debbaut (Hood River, OR) in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.93).
In diving, freshman Johann Schmidt (Nanuet, NY) won both the one-meter and three-meter, defeating teammate Trevor Stack (Glenbrook, IL) who finished second.
The Jumbos relied heavily on their depth with multiple second, third and fourth place finishes. Senior quad captain Joe Lessard (Framingham, MA) finished second in both the 500 and 1,000 freestyles. Freshman Andrew Berman (Miami, FL) finished second in the 400 individual medley and third in the 100 breastsroke. Junior EJ Testa (Cheshire, CT) finished second in the 200 backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke. Testa teamed up with Debbaut, freshman Eric Douglas (Southbury, CT) and Jenkins to finish second in the 200 medley relay that opened the meet. Tufts had a strong 200 freestyle with Altman, junior Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT), and Rood finishing second, third, and fourth.
The Jumbos finished their opening weekend strong posting a perfect 3-0 record. They're back in action December 3-4 at the MIT invitational.
