Jess Rubine waged an outstanding battle before losing the #4 match

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Tufts University women's squash team saw its two-match winning streak ended on Friday night in a 9-0 loss at Wesleyan University. The Jumbos, ranked 23rd in the latest College Squash Association poll, are now 3-4 overall. #16 Wesleyan improved to 3-1.
The match featured three contests that went five games. At #1, Tufts junior Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) won the first game 12-10 before dropping the next two. She stayed alive with an 11-9 victory in the fourth game, but fell to Wesleyan's Mary Foster in the decisive fifth game 11-5.
Jumbo junior Mercedes Barba (New York, NY) was up 2-1 in the third match, but Cardinal Grace Zimmerman took 11-6 wins in the fourth and fifth games to secure the win. Tufts sophomore Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) came back from down 2-0 to force a fifth game with 11-8 and 13-11 victories at #4. In a grueling fifth game, Wes's Tanesha Jackson won 16-14.
Wesleyan won the other matches in three games, though both senior co-captain #2 Valerie Koo (Hong Kong, China) and junior #5 Alyse Vinosyi (West Hartford, CT) were competitive for Coach Belkys Velez's Tufts team.
Tufts next plays Boston College on Sunday at MIT. The match begins at 4 pm.
