BOSTON - Senior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) and junior Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) both opened the 2010-11 Tufts University women's indoor track & field season excellently on Saturday at the Jay Carisella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University.
Collins won the high jump event by clearing 5'5 3/4" (1.67m), which also surpassed the NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark of 5'5 1/4" (1.66m). She also ran a 200 meters time of 26.89 seconds for 12th place out of 73.
Likewise, Wilfert's time of 17:37.46 in the 5,000 meters was also an NCAA provisional time and was third at the meet. Last season indoors, She ran ninth in the final of the NCAA mile run with a 5:09.95 time. She just missed All-American honors, which went to the top eight finishers.
Sophomore Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) picked up where she left off last year in the throwing events. She tossed the shot put 40'8 3/4" (12.41m) for sixth place out of 36 competitors in the event. Allen's 44'8" (13.61m) in the weight throw was eighth out of 29. Junior Ronke Oyekunle (Harvard, MA) was seventh in the shot put at 39'1 1/4" (11.92m).
The 4x400 meter relay team was in good synch for the season-opener. Their 4:11.33 finish was fifth at the meet. The names of the Jumbo foursome is not yet available.
The Jumbos are now idle for the next month prior to the upcoming Dartmouth Relays.
