MEDFORD -- The Trinity College Bantams led wire-to-wire en route
to a 67-62 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in NESCAC men's
basketball action on Friday evening at Cousens Gymnasium.
Trinity built a 10-point halftime lead on the shoulders of
junior Ian Fels (Miami, FL), who scored 11 first-half points.
Senior Dave Beyel (Ocean City, NJ) kept the Jumbos
close with 15 first-half points of his own on six of 11 shooting.
The Bantams dominated the glass in the first half, 23-9, as
sophomore Salah Abdo (Chelsea, MA) grabbed 10 boards in the
half.
The Bantams never relinquished their advantage in the second
half, and they held a 13-point lead with 4:33 remaining. The Jumbos
would use a furious rally late in the contest to pull within two,
and they had the ball with a chance to tie, but could not convert
and Trinity sealed the win by knocking down key free throws.
Beyel finished with a game-high 23 points, while senior
Jon Pierce (Belmont, MA) scored 17. Trinity
finished with four players in double-digits as both Fels and junior
Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, NY) checked in
with 16 points. Abdo would register a double-double for the Bantams
with 10 points and 15 boards.
Tufts shot 42.6 percent (23/54) overall and Trinity finished at
42.1 percent (24/57). The Bantams held a distinct advantage on the
glass, out-rebounding the Jumbos 43-30.
Tufts falls to 5-16 overall and 1-6 in the NESCAC. They will
take on Amherst College on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm for Senior
Day. Trinity is now 3-3 in the conference and 10-10 overall. They
play at Bates tomorrow at 4 pm.
