ORANGE, Calif. -- For the second straight day, the Tufts
University softball team split a pair of games played in California
on Friday. Returning to Sun West Tournament action after three days
away, the Jumbos defeated St. Olaf College 10-8 in their first
action of the day, but were defeated 9-1 in five innings by Cal
Baptist University in the second game.
Tufts is 6-4 heading into their final day of action in
California on Saturday. They play St. Thomas at noon and Hamline at
2 pm in the Sun West Tournament.
Against St. Olaf, senior RF Stefanie Tong (Burlingame,
CA) went 4 for 4 with two RBI. They both came on a double
in the second inning when Tufts took the lead for good by scoring
four runs. Sophomore 2B Mira Lieman-Sifry
(Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) also had two RBI for the Jumbos.
Her sacrifice fly added to the team's haul in the second inning,
and she also had an RBI single in the fifth. St. Olaf (0-3) had
pulled within 7-5 by scoring three times in the top of the fifth,
but the Jumbos answered with three of their own in the bottom of
the inning.
St. Olaf's Julie Fergus hit a three-run home run in the top of
the seventh to pull the Oles within 10-8. St. Olaf would get the
tying run to first base, but Jumbo senior pitcher Erin Gallagher (Brooklyn, NY) got the final out on a
pop-up.
The Jumbos finished with 15 hits overall, their second-best
total so far this spring. Sophomore 1B Lena Cantone
(Southington, CT) was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an
RBI at the top of the batting order. Senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) and junior Izzie Santone
(Madison, CT) both had two hits and scored a run.

runs out of the nine-hole. First year Aly Moskowitz
(Westfield, NJ) was the winner in the pitcher's
circle.

runs scored and an RBI. First year RF Cara Lemon finished 2 for 3

Against Cal Baptist, the #1 ranked NAIA team in the national,

Kendall Gorham broke the California Baptist University
single-season home run record with two long-balls in the game. She
got her 16th homer of the year in the first inning against Tufts,
driving in Ashley Boyd ahead of her and making it 2-0. With one out
in the third Gorham again sent a shot over the center field wall
for her 17th home run of the season.
Gorham's solo-shot opened up a five-run inning for the Lancers
that sealed the victory for Tory Ferreira. Ferreira went five
innings giving up five hits and one run. Iuppa was the only Jumbo
to score, hitting a two-out single in the third and scoring when
Cantone followed with a double.
