LEWISTON, Me. -- Tufts University put on a dominating show in a
doubleheader Saturday against the Bates College softball team,
opening the teams' three-game series with a 9-0 win in Game 1 and a
10-2 win in five innings in Game 2. Tufts (13-7, 4-1 NESCAC East)
finishes the three-game NESCAC East Division series tomorrow at
Bates (2-15, 0-5 NESCAC East) with a single game starting at 11:30
am.
Tufts junior pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison,
CT) was an out away from a no-hitter in Game 1, before
Bates' Lauren Dobish and Leah Maciejewski pieced together
consecutive singles. Until that point, Bates' lone baserunner in
the game reached on an error in the sixth inning. Santone (3-4)
extinguished the rally and ended the game with her eighth strikeout
of the day. In earning the shutout, Santone allowed just two hits
and no walks.
Tufts posted a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run
home run by sophomore Lena Cantone (Southington,
CT), her first of the year, then added two more in the
third, including an RBI single by Cantone. Senior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT) later hit a solo home run in the
sixth and added a two-run shot in the seventh, her third and fourth
homers of the year, to finish the game 3 for 3 with four runs and
three RBIs.
Bates first-year pitcher Caroline Gattuso took the loss, going
all seven innings and allowing seven earned runs while striking out
five.
In Game 2, Bates sophomore Kelly McManus hit the team's first
home run of the season in the bottom of the second to tie the game
at 2-2. McManus's drive to left scored Monica Berube, who had led
off the inning with a single. But the Jumbos went back ahead with a
run in the third, as Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson,
NY) reached on a fielder's choice and later came home on a
two-base error.
The score remained 3-2 until the Jumbos ended the game under the
eight-run rule by posting seven runs in the top of the fifth inning
and holding the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the fifth. The
inning was highlighted for Tufts by Stefanie Tong's
(Burlingame, CA) two-run home run, one of eight hits for
the Jumbos in the inning.
First year Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA)
earned the five-inning, complete-game victory to lift her record to
5-2. Bates starter Kristen Finn accepted the loss.
Tufts accumulated 11 hits off of Bates pitching in Game 2,
including two hits apiece by Sullivan, Cantone and Kim Miner (Concord, MA).
Berube had two hits in Game 2 for the Bobcats.
