LEWISTON, Me. -- Tufts University slugged three home runs,
including two by senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin,
CT), en route to an 8-3 defeat of the Bates College
softball team on Sunday, completing a three-game series sweep of
the NESCAC East Division rival.
Bates (2-16, 0-6 NESCAC East) got on the scoreboard first with a
pair of runs in the first inning. Sophomore Kelly McManus
(Plymouth, NH) reached on a fielder's choice after sophomore
Courtney Talcott (Sutton, MA) drew a leadoff walk. Sophomore Lauren
Dobish (Chambersburg, PA) roped a double to right center to score
McManus, and Dobish moved on to third on a one-base error in the
Tufts outfield. Sophomore Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, NJ) hit a
sacrifice fly to right field to score Dobish for a 2-0 lead.
Bates starter Kristen Finn (Winthrop, MA) threw scoreless first
and second innings, but the Jumbos (14-7, 5-1 NESCAC East) reached
her for five runs on five hits in the third, including an RBI
double by first year Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA),
a sacrifice fly by Sullivan, an RBI single up the middle by
sophomore Lena Cantone (Southington, CT), and
finally a two-run home run to left field by senior
Stephanie Tong (Burlingame, CA), Tong's second
homer in two days.
The Bobcats loaded the bases with just one out in the fourth,
drawing two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Tufts first-year
Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) came on in relief
of first-year starter Aly Moskowitz (Westfield,
NJ). DiBiase surrendered an RBI fielder's choice by Bates
sophomore Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, MA), which scored sophomore
Monica Berube (Plaistow, NH) but didn't result in a second out. But
from there DiBiase got the final two outs with no further harm
done. DiBiase went on to throw three more scoreless innings to seal
the win, improving her record to 6-2.
The Jumbos increased the lead to 6-3 on Sullivan's solo homer
down the left field line in the fifth. Sullivan struck again in the
seventh, hitting a two-run shot to right center, her sixth of the
season and fourth of the weekend.
Tufts plays a make-up game at Spicer Field against Bridgewater
State College on Tuesday at 4 pm. Bates is off for final exams this
week, and will next host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a
non-league home doubleheader next Sunday at 2 pm.
