MEDFORD -- Senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin,
CT) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth
inning of game two, giving the Tufts softball team a 3-2 victory
and split of a doubleheader against Trinity College on Sunday
afternoon at Spicer Field. The Bantams had overcome an early 4-0
deficit to win 6-5 in game one.
Trinity remains atop the NESCAC East standings after the split
with a 7-1 record in the division (15-8 overall). Tufts is second
in the NESCAC East at 6-2 (15-9 overall).
In the opener, the Jumbos scored four runs against Trinity
starter Kristen Anderson (West Haven, CT) in the bottom of the
first. First year 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA)
hit her second home run of the season in the inning. The Bantams
got three back in the top of the second, including a solo shot by
senior SS Patricia Cipicchio (Southmont, NC).
Bantam sophomore pitcher Katherine Poulos (Wilton, CT) did a
fine job in relief, eventually earning the victory. After entering
with one out in the first, she allowed just one more Tufts run and
five hits during 6.2 innings of work. Up 4-3 in the bottom of the
third, Tufts had the bases loaded against Poulos with two outs, but
Beinecke's screaming liner was snared by Cipicchio at
shortstop.
Trinity went ahead with three runs in the fifth inning. First
year 3B Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, CT) hit an RBI double and
scored a run during the rally. After adding an unearned run in the
bottom of the fifth, Tufts had the bases loaded in the bottom of
the seventh when Poulos earned the last out on a grounder to
Cipicchio.
The Bantams took advantage of four Tufts errors in game one.
First year catcher Nina Yu (Andover, MA) was 2 for 3 with a run and
an RBI in the game. For Tufts, Beinecke, senior RF Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA), and junior catcher Julia Silberman (Somers, NY) each had two hits. First year
pitcher Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA) absorbed
the loss, allowed seven hits and four earned runs in a complete
game.
In game two, Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first
when junior 2B Katherine Stoltenberg (Montgomery, NJ) singled and
scored. Tufts went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, combining
a walk to lead-off hitter Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus,
NJ), a double by Beinecke, a sacrifice fly from Sullivan
and Tong's RBI single. The Bantams tied the score at 2-2 in the
third as Stoltenberg singled and scored again.
Pitchers Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) from Tufts
and Lindsay Gibbons (Basking Ridge, NJ) from
Trinity didn't allow any runs from the fourth through seventh
innings. As the game went to extra innings, Trinity had
runners on first and second with two outs and Santone ended the
threat with a ground out.
Sullivan, one of four Jumbos playing on Seniors Day at Spicer
Field Sunday, led off the bottom the eighth with a line drive smash
to center, her eighth tater of the year, to win it.
Santone allowed nine hits and one earned run while striking out
five and walking one in eight innings for her fourth win. Beinecke
and sophomore LF Bri Cilley (Wells, ME) each had
two of Tufts' nine hits.
Gibbons pitched well in a losing effort, allowing eight hits and
three runs with two strike outs and a walk in seven innings.
Stoltenberg and first year LF Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, CA)
had two hits each for the Bantams.
The third game of the Tufts-Trinity NESCAC East series will be
made up at a later date.
