Sophomore CF Lizzy Iuppa scored three of Tufts'
eight runs on the day

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University Jumbos earned a double-header
sweep of the Bowdoin College Polars, 5-1 and 3-2, in NESCAC East
Division softball action on Saturday afternoon at Spicer Field.
With the sweep, the Jumbos won the weekend series, 2-1.
In game one of the afternoon, Tufts would grab the lead in the
second inning after first year 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord,
MA) led off with a single. She would move to second base
on a walk to junior catcher Julia Silberman (Somers,
NY), and then senior DP Christy Tinker
(Woodbridge, CT) grounded into a fielder's choice. The
relay throw for a double-play attempt was errant, allowing Beinecke
to score. On that same play, Tinker was retired. One batter later,
with the bases empty, first-year LF Liz Pinzino (Marlboro,
MA) deposited the ball over the left-field fence for a
solo homer to give the Jumbos a 2-0 advantage.
Bowdoin would answer back with a run of its own in the top of
the third, using a pair of infield singles from sophomore 2B Amy
Hackett (Bangor, ME) and sophomore LF Caroline Dewar (Katonah, NY).
Tufts would re-assume a two-run lead in the bottom of the inning on
an RBI single from senior shortstop Casey Sullivan (Berlin,
CT), scoring sophomore CF Lizzy Iuppa (Paramus,
NJ), who had singled to lead things off.
The score would remain 3-1 in favor of the Jumbos until they
added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tufts
would use small-ball to its advantage. Sophomore 3B Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) led off with a bunt
single and caught the defense sleeping as she moved over to second
base. Iuppa followed with a single, which moved Lieman-Sifry to
third base. Lena Cantone (Southington, CT)
grounded out to the right side scoring Sifry, and Sullivan would
come through with a sacrifice fly.
Tufts first year starting pitcher Rebecaa DiBiase
(Wellesley, MA) would go the distance for the Jumbos,
allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no
walks. DiBiase is now 3-2 on the season. Junior Kara Nilan
(Pittsfield, MA) pitched all six frames for the Polar Bears,
allowing the five runs on eight hits. She struck out four and
walked just one batter as she fell to 1-3 for the year.
At the top of the order in game one, Iuppa went 2 for 3 with two
runs scored, and Sullivan was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Pinzino's home
run in the second inning was the first of her career. Dewar was the
only Polar Bear to reach base twice in the game.
Bowdoin would take the initial lead in the second of game of the
afternoon, plating one run in the top of the first. Nilan led off
the game with a single and stole second base. She moved to third on
a groundout and then came home on a sacrifice fly by senior
shortstop Shavonne Lord (Shrewsbury, MA). The Polar Bears
double-upped their lead in the second inning on an RBI base-knock
by junior 3B Molly Nestor (Duxbury, MA).
The two-run lead for the Polar Bears did not last long though,
as in the bottom of the second Tufts would tie it up on a two-run,
line-drive home run by Silberman that just cleared the fence in
straight-away centerfield. For Silberman, it was her third homer of
the season. The score would remain deadlocked at 2-2 until the
bottom of the fifth, when the Jumbos pushed ahead the eventual
game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Cantone.
First-year Ally Moskowitz (Westfield, NJ)
pitched the first six innings for the Jumbos, giving up two runs on
six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. She gave way to junior
Izzie Santone (Madison, CT) in the seventh, and
Santone proceeded to pick up the save while stranding a runner on
third base. Moskowitz remains perfect on the season at 3-0, while
Santone earned her first save of the year.
Tufts tallied only four hits in the second game, but Iuppa was
strong once again at the top order, reaching base twice on two
walks. Beinecke finished 1 for 2 in game two, reaching base on a
single and a walk with a run scored.
For Bowdoin, Nilan had two hits in game two, while senior 1B
Lauren Coven (Ridgewood, NJ) walked and doubled. First-year Tricia
Thibodeau (Cape Elizabeth, ME) went the first 4.1 innings for the
Polar Bears allowing three runs on three hits. She did not record a
strikeout and walked two batters. Senior Julia Jacobs (Ridgewood,
NJ) relieved her and in 1.2 innings allowed one inherited runner to
score with one hit and two strikeouts. Thibodeau was dealt the
loss, dropping her to 4-2 for the year.
After winning the three-game series, Tufts is now 9-6 overall
and begin league play at 2-1. Bowdoin falls to 14-7 and starts 1-2
in the NESCAC East. The Jumbos head to Springfield on Monday
afternoon for a twinbill at 3:30 pm, while Bowdoin will be at
Maine-Farmington on Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 pm
double-header.
