SPRINGFIELD -- The Tufts University softball team split a
doubleheader at Springfield College in non-league action this
afternoon at SC's sunny Potter Field. In the first game, the Jumbos
scored three runs in the last two innings to come from behind to
win, 3-2. Megan Fitzgerald hurled a complete-game 8-5 victory in
game #2 to lead Springfield. The Pride is now 11-10 overall, while
Tufts is 10-7.
In game #1, Springfield had taken a 2-0 lead into the top of the
sixth inning. With the score tied at zero, first year shortstop
Kelly Blake knocked in the first run in the bottom of the fifth,
followed two batters later by a sacrifice fly by senior catcher
Michelle Wlosek to centerfield. Freshman pitcher Stef Grande was in
control at that moment for the Pride.
In the sixth, however, the momentum shifted. With one out, Tufts
sophomore LF Lena Cantone (Southington, CT)
singled. She was then forced at second. But senior RF
Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA) then tripled to
left-center, scoring the first run for the Jumbos. Senior 1B
Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) then singled
sharply to left, and the score was tied at 2-2.
In the seventh, with one out, Tufts loaded the bases. Cantone
then delivered a sacrifice fly to center, with junior catcher
Julia Silberman (Somers, NY) scoring what proved
to be the winning run.
The game one winner was first year Tufts right-hander
Rebecca DiBiase (Wellesley, MA), who went the
distance, giving up just five hits, and one earned run, striking
out two, and walking one. Grande, who took the loss for the Pride,
is now 3-7, although she continues to pitch very well.
It looked like it was going to be a Tufts day built a 4-0
advantage entering the bottom of the fourth inning in game #2.
Cantone and senior SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT)
hit back-to-back doubles in the first, when Tufts scored three
times. First year 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA)
singled to lead off the fourth and scored.
However, everything fell into place for the Pride in the that
frame as SC managed to push across eight runs on seven hits, with
the aid of three Jumbo errors. For SC, that inning began with Blake
lashing a single by first base, followed by a double by Wlosek.
Senior RF Bryn Worrilow then singled to left, scoring one run.
Sophomore DP Liz Milly then hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate
the second run. Junior 1B Amanda Novak then doubled to the deepest
part of center, missing a home run by less than a foot. Three more
hits, a walk, and three errors produced five more runs before
another out was recorded. The big hit in the latter stages of that
inning was a two-run single by Blake, who wound up with two hits in
that frame. That made it 8-4 after four.
Tufts had scored three runs in the first, and one in the fourth.
The Jumbos added one run in the top of the sixth when sophomore 3B
Mira Lieman-Sifry (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) doubled
to left center and moments later scored on a throwing error. That
ended the scoring at 8-5.
Fitzgerald picked up the win, her fifth against two losses on
the season. The sophomore right-hander gave up eight hits and just
two earned runs, while striking out two and walking two. Taking the
loss for the Jumbos was junior right-hander Izzie Santone
(Madison, CT), who gave up 12 hits and six earned runs,
striking out one and walking one in six innings of work.
Tufts will play Bridgewater State in a pair of make-up games at
Spicer Field on Thursday beginning at 3:30 pm. Springfield will
host Eastern Connecticut in a doubleheader Tuesday, starting at
3:30 pm.
