SOMERVILLE – The Middlebury College Panthers opened NESCAC
men's soccer action for the 2010 season with a 1-0 victory at Tufts
University on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The game was the first in the head coaching tenure of Tufts' Josh
Shapiro, a 1997 Middlebury graduate.
Middlebury held an advantage in play for the first half and was
rewarded with the only goal of the game in the 35th
minute. A free kick by junior Robbie Redmond (Morristown, NJ) was
headed by junior Tyler Macnee (Williston, VT) and the ball got up
over the reach of Tufts junior keeper Alan
Bernstein (Wayne, NJ).
Middlebury finished the first 45 minutes with advantages of 7-4
in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks. Bernstein and Panthers junior
goalie Tim Cahill (South Glastonbury, CT) both made just one save
each in the first half.
With Shapiro using 18 players in the game, the Jumbos maintained
their energy and were more equal with their opponents in the second
half. Both Bernstein and Cahill saved four shots in the second
half, but neither team managed to put a serious scoring attempt on
goal during the frame.
The Panthers recorded a 9-7 second-half edge in shots to finish
with a 16-11 margin for the game. An even 3-3 tally in corner kicks
for the second half gave Middlebury a 7-4 final total.
Cahill's shutout was the seventh of his career. He finished with
five saves. Bernstein, making his second career start, also
finished with five stops. Macnee was most active offensive player
for Middlebury with four shots, while Tufts' Ron Coleman
(North Haven, CT) put two shots on target.
Tufts plays at Endicott on Tuesday (Sept. 14) at 6 pm.
Middlebury, a NESCAC finalist last season, continues conference
play at Trinity next Saturday (Sept. 18) at 2:30 pm.
