year

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Nationally-ranked Tufts University
scored a pair of goals in the first half on its way to a
hard-fought 2-1 victory over host Babson College in a
non-conference field hockey contest at MacDowell Field on Tuesday
night. With the win, the Jumbos, ranked third in the country in the
most recent Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll,
improved to 2-0 on the season. Meanwhile, the Beavers saw their
record dip to 2-2 following their second straight loss to a top-10
opponent.
Tufts jumped in front early, as sophomore Kayla Murphy
(Pawcatuk, CT) intercepted an attempted clear on the right side and
backhanded a shot through a crowd and in at 6:30. The Jumbos then
made it 2-0 on a penalty corner in the latter stages of the half,
as senior Tess
Guttadauro (Carlisle, MA) took a pass from junior Sarah Cannon
(Atkinson, NH) on the left side and blasted it home at 26:36.
Babson cut its deficit in half with just over four minutes
remaining in the game, beginning when senior captain Colleen Kelly
(Milton, MA) sent a pass toward the right side of the circle.
There, sophomore Kelly Walsh (Gardner, MA) received the pass,
turned, and ripped a shot inside the right post at 65:59. However,
that would prove to be the Beavers' final shot on net in the
contest as Tufts came away with the 1-0 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, MA) made 10 saves in
defeat for Babson, while junior Marianna Zak
(Concord, MA) stopped one shot in net for Tufts.
