Senior Ben Green added
to the Tufts comeback with two goals
|
BEVERLY - Visiting Tufts University tallied four second-half
goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Endicott College
4-1 on Tuesday night at Endicott Stadium. The Jumbos improve
to 1-1 on the season while the Gulls stall at 0-2-1. The victory is
the first of head coach Josh Shapiro's career.
Gregory Capece (Port Jefferson Station, NY) put the hosts on the
board in the first half thanks to a nice feed from freshman Bobby
Durben (Stow, MA). Tufts sophomore Franco Silva
(Houston, TX) netted the equalizer in the opening minutes of the
second stanza before tallying the game-winner ten minutes later.
Senior Ben
Green (Burlington, VT) notched a pair of insurance goals to
help lift Tufts to their first win of the season.
Capece found himself on the receiving end of a perfectly-timed
through ball by Durben and hammered a low shot just inside the near
post in the 7th minute. The goal was the second of
the season for the junior forward and gave the Gulls their first
halftime lead of the season. Robbie DiTomasso's (Farmington,
CT) slow roller in the 10th minute was destined for
goal, but cleared off the line at the last second by a Tufts
defender.
Junior Ryan Coates (Wethersfield, CT) nearly doubled the lead in
the first half, but had his volley deflected away by Jumbo goalie
Zach
Cousens (Contocook, NH).
The second half gave way to the Jumbos' offense, which erupted
for four goals after being held scoreless for the last game and a
half.
Kieran Lewis
(Haywards Heath, UK) found a streaking Antoine Golbin (Harrison,
NY) down the left side of the field. Golbin cut the ball
toward goal and found a wide open Silva in front of the net,
knotting the game at one.
The eventual game winner came less than ten minutes later, when
Silva picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and buried it
into the back of the net.
Green supplied the first of two insurance goals in the
75th minute. The senior cleaned up after Endicott
keeper Daniel Higgins' (Kingstown, RI) point-blank save on Michael
Walker's (Los Altos, CA) header sailed to the top of the
box.
The Jumbos' knocked in the fourth and final goal after a nice
give-and-go near midfield. Freshman Ben Ewing
(Lafayette, CA) came all the way from the back line and dropped a
chip across the penalty area onto the head of a charging Green.
Endicott's Higgins was peppered for 15 shots including 13 in the
second half. The sophomore recorded four saves over the 90
minutes. Cousens, seeing the first action of his Jumbo career,
picked up his first career win. The junior made four saves in
90 minutes of action.
The Jumbos remain on the road for a Friday match at Amherst.
Next up for the Gulls is travel to Springfield on Saturday to take
on Western New England.
