MEDFORD - The visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers
scored a goal in each half and received fine play in goal from
freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, MA) to earn an impressive 2-0
victory at Tufts on Tuesday night at Bello Field.
An entertaining first half saw plenty of scoring opportunities
for both sides. Tufts sophomore Franco Silva
(Houston, TX) was sprung open twice early on, but Young made saves
to keep the hosts off the scoreboard. Mass Maritime's Kevin McCord
(Norwell, MA) later hit the post, and the rebound shot by Mike
McCarthy (Norwell, MA) was saved by Tufts junior keeper Zach Cousens
(Contocook, NH).
The Buccaneers broke through in the 34th minute when a low cross
into the middle by Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, MA) was one-timed into
the low right corner by sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, MA) for
his second goal of the season.
The Jumbos had a great opportunity to tie the score when
sophomore Kieran Lewis
(Haywards Heath, UK) was fouled in the box and a penalty kick was
awarded. Jesse Poon
(Cumberland, RI) tried to tap it by Young inside the right post,
but the shot was just wide.
With MMA leading 1-0 early in the second half, Tufts senior Ron
Coleman (North Haven, CT) collected a loose ball and fired a
shot that Young saved at the left post.
With the pace slowing as the second half wore on, the Buccaneers
netted a huge insurance goal in the 76th minute when McCord
(Norwell, MA) converted a cross from McCarthy (Norwell, MA).
Young finished with six saves, adding aggressive play out of the
net to his several key stops. Tufts out-shot the Buccaneers 18-11
and had a 12-2 margin in corner kicks, but MMA's freshman keeper
was unflappable. Cousens finished with three saves in the Tufts
goal.
The Jumbos (1-2-1) lost for the first time in three games, while
the Buccaneers (2-4) stopped a four-game slide.
Tufts returns to NESCAC play when they host Wesleyan on Saturday
at Kraft Field beginning at 2:30 pm. MMA hosts Westfield State on
Friday at 6 pm.
