Updike recorded 25 kills with just one error in two
matches

MEDFORD - The 29th ranked Tufts University Jumbos did not lose a
set as it won a pair of matches, 3-0, over Smith College and Vassar
College in Pool D action of the 2010 MIT Women's Volleyball
Invitational on Friday night at Cousens Gymnasium.
In the first match of the day against Smith, the Jumbos won by
scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11. Senior Caitlin
Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) finished with match with 11 kills
and no errors in 20 attempts. Classmate Kelly
Engelking (Westborough, MA) also had 11 kills. Sophomore Kendall
Lord (LaJolla, CA) served four aces. Updike's 11 digs was tops
for Tufts, while sophomore Kiersten
Ellefsen (Goshen, NY) was in on three blocks.
Smith kept the first set close until the Jumbos, with the score
7-7, tallied 11 straight points on the back of Updike. Lord's ace
pushed the Tufts advantage to 13 at 22-9 as the Jumbos then cruised
to a 25-10 win. The set saw just four ties and two lead changes as
the Pioneers largest lead was two at 5-3.
The Pioneers held the lead in the second set at 5-3, and then
the action was tied at 5, 6, 7 and 8 before Tufts used another
11-point run to bolt ahead, 18-8. This streak came with Lord at the
service line, which included three aces. From that point on, Smith
was even with the Jumbos, but Tufts finished the second set off,
25-15.
Tufts was too much for Smith to handle in the third set as the
Jumbos jumped on top, 10-3, after a pair of aces from Updike. The
lead never dipped below six with Tufts taking the match victory,
3-0, with a 14-point third-set decision, 25-11.
The Jumbos tallied set victories of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-12 over
Vassar, who also beat Smith earlier in the day, 3-0. Fourteen kills
from Updike paced the offense, which also received 39 Lord assists.
Junior Audrey Kuan
(Los Altos, CA) had 11 digs to lead the defense.
In the first set there were three early ties at 1, 3 and 5. The
Brewers held an advantage at 3-2 before Tufts took the lead and
never relinquished it. Updike scored two aces to give the Jumbos an
11-6 lead. Tufts went onto double-up Vassar at 20-10 before scoring
five of the final eight points for the 25-13 first set win.
The Brewers kept it close again in the beginning of the second
set, also holding a lead at 4-3, and later at 12-10. Kills from
Updike and junior Lexi
Nicholas (San Diego, CA) put the Jumbos into a tie at 12, and
then Tufts eventually jumped ahead at 14-13 and never looked back.
Nicholas finished off the set with a pair of aces as the Jumbos
won, 25-16.
Tufts sprinted ahead early in the third set, 7-3, and the
Brewers never came back to take a lead or tie for the entire set.
The largest lead for the Jumbos was the final margin, 25-12.
The Jumbos, who have not lost since the opening night of the
season on September 10, now stand at 8-2 on the season and will
continue action in the MIT Invitational on Saturday in
Cambridge.
