SOMERVILLE - On an unseasonably warm fall day, the Tufts
University Jumbos out-shot the Wesleyan University Cardinals,
22-12, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw in NESCAC women's soccer
action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The Cardinals struck early at just 56 seconds into the match
when a bouncing ball in the box was deposited into the back of the
net by sophomore Laura Kurash (Voorhees, NJ). Kurash leads Wesleyan
with four goals for the season. Wesleyan held the 1-0 advantage
into halftime.
Tufts had a solid chance to tie in the 32nd minute of the half.
Junior Lauren
O'Connor (Dudley, MA) had a shot blocked that almost found its
way to an open Jumbo, but the Cardinal defense was able to clear it
from the goal line at the last moment.
Tufts forced Wesleyan keeper Clare Colton (Montclair, NJ), to
make two saves in the first half as the Jumbos let off 10 shots
while the Cardinals only had three. Sophomore Phoebe
Hanley (Mamaroneck, NY) was credited for one save to go along
with the goal allowed in the first half.
The Jumbos did not wait long in the second half to even the
score up. In the seventh minute of the half, junior Alix Michael
(Mercer Island, WA) took a loose ball in front of the net and
scored her second of the season, an unassisted tally.
The action continued to stay in the favor of the Jumbos, but
neither team could break through during the rest of regulation.
Colton made two more saves in regulation and overtime for the
Cardinals, while first-year Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) entered the
net for the Jumbos in the second half, picking up four saves.
Neither team had a good opportunity to take the win in the extra
time as mid-field play dominated the 20 minutes.
With the tie, Tufts remains at .500 in the NESCAC at 1-1-1,
while holding a 1-2-2 overall mark. Wesleyan has yet to earn a
decision in its first three NESCAC matches, now standing at 0-0-3
and 1-1-3 overall.
The Jumbos return to non-league play on Wednesday with a 4 pm
home match against Babson. Wesleyan will take on in-state foe
Western Connecticut at home on Tuesday.
