BOSTON/CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts University women's indoor track & field team competed at two venues on Saturday, with the distance medley relay running at Boston University and a larger faction of the team in action at MIT. Both were non-scoring meets, and Tufts won three events at MIT.
Sophomore thrower Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) earned a first place in the shot put and a second in the weight throw at MIT. Her 40'6" (12.34m) won handily in the shot, and she followed up with a 48-foot weight throw (14.63m).
First year Laura Peterson (Melrose, MA) won an exciting race to the finish line in the mile. Her 5:33.11 time was nine-tenths of a second faster than host MIT's Marie Burkland. Junior Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY) posted a 10'6" (3.20m) victory in the pole vault for Tufts.
The Jumbos had a pair of seconds in the jumps at MIT. Senior tri-captain Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) produced a 35'1 1/4" (10.7m) triple jump to place second. First year Kristen Roberts (Marlborough, MA) had her best finish of the season as the runner-up in the high jump at 5'0 1/4" (1.53m).
Newcomer to the team Alyssa von Puttkammer (Park City, UT) crossed the finish line in 11:01.04 for second place in the 3,000 meters. In the 800, senior Jennifer Yih (Palo Alto, CA) was the first of a 2-3-4 Tufts finish with a 2:30.67 time.
At Boston University on Saturday, the distance medley relay team of sophomore Julia Hajnoczky (Wallingford, PA), sophomore Sam Bissonnette (Bridgewater, MA), sophomore Kaylee Maykranz (Jackson, WY) and senior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) ran a 12:27.34 time for eighth place in a race won by Boston College.
The Jumbos host their second of three invitationals at Gantcher Center this season on Friday (multi) and Saturday.
