BRUNSWICK, ME - The Tufts volleyball team breezed through NESCAC matches against Bates and Colby on Saturday at Bowdoin College, winning both in three sets. The Jumbos defeated the Bobcats 25-12, 25-18, 25-14, and then took care of Colby 25-15, 25-13, 25-19.
After suffering their first NESCAC loss in three sets to Bowdoin on Friday night, the Jumbos were on top of their game Saturday. They hit .341 in the Bates match with seven service aces and seven blocks, and followed that up with a .346 hitting percentage with eight aces and eight blocks against Colby.
Senior tri-captain Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) led Tufts against Bates with 12 kills, while first years Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) and Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) had just one attack error each while recording 10 and nine kills, respectively. Junior Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) finished with 32 assists in the three sets, served two of the aces and finished with 11 digs. Spieler was in on three blocks and had 15 digs defensively.
Bates, who had more errors (22) than kills (17) in the match, was led by five kills from Chrissy Gee. Nicole Russell finished with 17 digs, while Tess Walther had 15 assists and two aces.
Seven Jumbos recorded blocks in the Colby match, led by a solo and two assists from first year Izzy Kuhel (Brisbane, CA). Offensively, both Spieler and Brennan made seven kills with no errors in 17 attempts for .412 percentages. Junior Natale Bruck (Iverness, IL) served three aces.
On the Colby side, Kate Bellerose had six kills, while Kate Pleasants ended up with 19 assists, three service aces and eight digs. Emily Varni was tops defensively with 11 digs.
The Jumbos improved to 4-1 in NESCAC, tied with Connecticut College for second place. They are 11-3 overall. Bates remained winless in league play at 0-4 and dropped to 2-12 overall. Colby is now 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Tufts returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 5) at home against perennial regional power Wellesley College. The match begins at 7 pm.
