Freshman Gus Santos has scored golden goals nine days apart

SOMERVILLE - Freshman Gus Santos (Framingham, MA) netted his second golden goal of the season in the 102nd minute as the Tufts University Jumbos came from two goals down to beat the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs, 3-2, in non-league action on Tuesday afternoon at Kraft Field.
The Corsairs struck first just nine minutes into the match. Tufts senior keeper Zach Cousens (Contocook, NH) was called for a penalty in the box, resulting in a penalty shot for freshman Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA). Gontijo buried it for his sixth goal of the season.
UMass-Dartmouth was able to double its lead just a few moments later in the 13th minute after receiving a direct-kick opportunity. This time it was sophomore Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA) who converted the chance.
The Jumbos had four corner kicks in the first half, but could not take advantage of them. They also had four shots on goal that were all saved by Corsair freshman keeper Tim Walsh (Stow, MA) in the first 44 minutes of the half.
Tufts finally was able to cut the lead in half with just 13 seconds remaining on a tally from freshman Sam Williams (Thetford Center, VT) off an assist from sophomore Jono Edelman (Memphis, TN).
The Jumbos out-shot the Corsairs in the first half 11-2, but both Corsair shots were for goals.
Tufts had a pair of chances to tie the game early in the second half. They received a penalty shot in the 58th minute, but Walsh guessed correctly, diving to his left to make the save on the attempt by senior Matt Blumenthal (Simsbury, CT). In the 61st minute, a header from freshman Kyle Volpe (Blackstone, MA) just missed wide.
A header would tie it for Tufts in the 77th minute. After a foul led to a free kick, junior Rafael Ramos-Meyer (Washington, DC) delivered it into the box where freshman Peter Lee-Kramer (Princeton, NJ) put it in the net. The Jumbos had a chance to win the match in the final seconds, but Walsh came up with a big save on a shot from Volpe.
The first overtime period went by without any real scoring chances, but less than two minutes into the second extra session, Santos was able to deliver the winner. He took a pass from midfield from Volpe with his back to the goal, spun right past a defender and sent the ball to the far-left post to end it. His previous game-winner in overtime came against Trinity on October 2.
Tufts dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 22-6 shot advantage. Walsh was strong for the Corsairs making eight saves. Cousens made one save, which came in the first overtime period. The Jumbos had nine corners to just two for UMass-Dartmouth.
The Jumbos are now 5-2-2 and will go back into NESCAC play on Saturday with a home match against Williams at 2:30 pm. UMass-Dartmouth falls to 7-4-1 and will host Mass Maritime on Thursday at 7 pm.
