First-year Becca Rubin contributed defensively off the bench

HARTFORD - Tied 1-1 with ninth place Wesleyan in a NESCAC match at Trinity College on Friday night, the second-place Jumbo volleyball team rolled to wins in the third and fourth sets to take the match 3-1. Senior tri-captain Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) led the Jumbos with 15 kills.
Tufts won decisively 25-14 in the first set, but the Cardinals evened the match with a 25-23 win in the second. The Jumbos took care of business 25-10 and 25-18 in the third and fourth to capture the win. Tufts is now 16-3 overall and 7-1 in NESCAC. Wesleyan dropped to 5-14 and 1-5.
Junior Kiersten Ellefsen (Goshen, NY) stepped in and had a strong performance, starting in the middle and moving to outside during the match. She finished with eight kills and two errors on 17 attempts while making 17 serves with no errors. She also went up for two block assists. The Jumbos also got a strong defensive performance off the bench from first-year Becca Rubin (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) with seven digs, including six in the second set. First-year Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) served three aces for the Jumbos, passed 15 times with no errors and contributed seven digs and two block assists while chipping in six kills.
Cardinal senior OH Casey Reed (Manhattan Beach, CA) totaled eight kills and 31 digs.
The Jumbos play host Trinity on Saturday at 1:30 pm, while Wesleyan takes on Connecticut College at 11 am.
