VOLLEYBALL HOLDS OFF TRINITY IN FIVE SETS TO IMPROVE TO 8-1 IN NESCAC PLAY

Box Score
Junior Kendall Lord averaged almost 11 assists per set vs. Trinity

HARTFORD, CT - Junior setter Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) collected 54 assists, 18 digs, three aces, and had a hand in five blocks to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a 3-2 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.

The Jumbos, sitting at #2 in the NESCAC standings, improve to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the league. Trinity, ranked #8 in New England, drops to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the NESCAC with its second consecutive loss.

Tufts grabbed the first two games over Trinity, 25-20 and 25-22, putting the Bantams in a quick hole.  Trinity regained momentum in the third game, ending the set on a 9-6 run to force a Game 4.  The Jumbos jumped out to a 6-3 lead in Game 4, and kept a slight edge most of the way, but the Bantams again came back strong, ending the game on a 7-1 run, sparked by a key kill from sophomore OH Hannah Brickley (Melrose, MA), one of her 23 on the day, to force a Game 5.

In the final game, Tufts immediately took a 6-0 lead.  The Jumbos went up 14-5, just one point shy of the win, before Trinity would run off six straight points to cut the lead to 14-11.  The late push by Trinity was too late, as Tufts scored the game's final point to seal their eighth consecutive victory.

First year Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, CA) totaled 13 kills and had four solo blocks while assisting on two others for Tufts. Classmates Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) and Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) also were in double figures on attack with 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Senior co-captain Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) had 13 kills and 23 digs in the match.

In addition to her game-high 23 kills, Brickley picked up 13 digs and two assists, while junior OH Danielle Isaman (West Hartford, CT) recorded 11 kills and 24 digs for the Bantams.

Next for the Jumbos is a match at Endicott on Wednesday at 7 pm. Trinity is at Coast Guard that night, also at 7 pm.
